An Opsgenie alternative for Canadian teams that mostly needed texts

If Opsgenie mostly turned your alert emails into texts, Welco is a simple Opsgenie alternative that keeps them coming after April 5, 2027. That is the shutdown date given in partner reports. Point those emails at your Welco address and the on-call cellphone keeps buzzing, from Halifax to Victoria. If you rely on its schedules and escalations, choose a full on-call tool instead.

Setting up alerts with Opsgenie takes 4 steps. With Welco it takes 4.

With Opsgenie

  1. Tools send alerts to Opsgenie
  2. Schedules pick who is on call
  3. The app and texts reach responders
  4. Everything stops April 5, 2027

With Welco

  1. Tools email your Welco address
  2. Time rules pick the phone
  3. A text reaches any Canadian cellphone
  4. Run it beside Opsgenie now

  • Atlassian stopped new Opsgenie sales on June 4, 2025, per partner and third-party reports.
  • Logins, APIs, integrations and the app stop on April 5, 2027. Data that isn't moved is deleted.
  • Welco replaces the texting part only. It has no rotations, escalation or acknowledgments.
  • You can switch one alert source at a time, well before the deadline.

Who should move to Welco, and who needs a full on-call tool

Not sure? List the Opsgenie features your team opened in the last 90 days. Many small teams find that texts were nearly all of it. Our Welco vs PagerDuty breakdown shows what a full tool adds.

  • Pick a full on-call tool: you run weekly rotations

Welco can send nights to one phone, but it has no rotation calendar that hands over each Monday.

  • Pick a full on-call tool: alerts must escalate

If nobody answers in 10 minutes, Welco won't move the alert to a second person.

  • Pick a full on-call tool: you track acknowledgments

Welco doesn't record who took ownership of an alert. SIGNL4's app-based alerting does.

  • Pick Welco: the texts did the real work

Your team set up Opsgenie years ago so alerts would reach a phone. The schedules went unused, and the texts carried the load through every long weekend.

  • Pick Welco: your tools send alerts by email

Nagios, PRTG, Zabbix triggers, SolarWinds alert emails, backup jobs and Outlook rules can all email your Welco address instead.

  • Pick Welco: you want this finished long before 2027

Move one source this week, keep Opsgenie running beside it, and retire it once every source has moved.

Opsgenie and Welco compared

Opsgenie dates come from partner and third-party reports, not from Welco. Confirm them on Atlassian's own notices before you plan. Other options are in our alert tool comparisons.

Your alert texts before and after the move

For a small IT team, the switch changes where alerts go. The alerts themselves stay the same.

Opsgenie, waiting for the cutoff

  • A product you can no longer buy, with an end date on the calendar.
  • Schedules nobody has edited in a year still decide who gets woken.
  • History and contact lists that vanish unless someone exports them.
  • Every alert source wired to a service that stops answering in 2027.

Welco, running before the deadline

  • Each tool emails your Welco address, so the cutoff date doesn't touch your texts.
  • Office hours and nights split with on-call routing, one rule per time window.
  • A failed backup can reach several phones, each one once.
  • Plain texts in each admin's built-in messages app, with no app to keep updated.

An end-of-day job alert, before and after

Many small teams, such as credit union IT shops, put Opsgenie in front of batch jobs and backups. Here is a failed end-of-day job email as a Welco text.

Alert email from opcon@core.example.ca, subject “Warning: DAYEND for BR014 completed with errors”. Welco trims it to one text of 99 characters: “Welco: [DAYEND] Branch 14 end-of-day job finished with errors at 11:52 PM. Reply STOP to opt out.”

Text received: Welco: [DAYEND] Branch 14 end-of-day job finished with errors at 11:52 PM. Reply STOP to opt out.

A rule can send job alerts only on weeknights, when the batch runs. See alert rules.

Replace Opsgenie texts in 15 minutes

Do this per alert source. The first one takes about 15 minutes, and the rest go faster.

  1. Write down what Opsgenie does for you

Before access ends, note each alert source, who got it and at what hours. Partner reports say unmoved data will be deleted, so do this first. The Opsgenie shutdown guide covers the wider timeline.

  2. Open your Welco account

Sign up and verify your business. Your Welco address is ready once the check is done.

  3. Invite the people who take alerts

Each admin joins from an email invite with their own cellphone number, then replies YES to one text. Until then, nothing is sent to that number.

  4. Rebuild the hours as routing rules

Make one rule for business hours and one for nights, weekends and statutory holidays. Match on the sender or the subject when different tools need different people.

  5. Swap the address in each tool

Approve the tool's sending address in Welco, then replace the Opsgenie email with your Welco address. Send a test alert and check the text arrives.

Frequently asked questions

When exactly does Opsgenie stop working?

April 5, 2027, according to Atlassian partner and third-party reports from Hyperping, AlertOps and Adaptavist. On that date, logins, APIs, integrations and the app stop. New sales already ended on June 4, 2025. Check Atlassian's own notice for the final word before you set your plan.

Will my Opsgenie alert history move into Welco?

No. Welco starts a fresh feed from the first alert email you send it. Partner reports say Opsgenie data that isn't moved will be deleted, so export the history, schedules and contact lists you want to keep. Then rebuild only the routing you still use.

Can Welco copy my Opsgenie on-call schedule?

Not as a schedule. Welco has no rotation calendar. It routes alerts by time of day and day of week, so you can send nights and weekends to one phone. If the person changes each week, you pick the new person on that rule, from staff who joined before their first week.

What does it cost a Canadian team to move alert texts from Opsgenie to Welco?

There is no setup fee, no per-user fee and nothing to install. You start with a 7-day free trial and 15 message credits, enough to move one alert source and watch it work. The card you verify with is only charged after you approve a plan, and plans never bill overage. See Welco plans for the monthly prices, in US dollars for Canadian customers too.

Should we wait until 2027 to leave Opsgenie?

No. Switching one alert source at a time is safer than a rush in March 2027, right at fiscal year-end for many Canadian organizations. Add your Welco address next to Opsgenie, run both for a few weeks, and retire Opsgenie once each source has moved. The deadline then passes without drama.

What should a small Canadian IT team look for in an Opsgenie replacement?

Start with what you actually used. If Opsgenie mostly delivered texts from alert emails, look for email setup, routing by time and no per-user fees. If you ran rotations, escalation and acknowledgments every week, look at full on-call tools. OnPage and AlertOps both publish Opsgenie replacement pages.

Can an admin reply to a Welco text the way they acknowledged in Opsgenie?

An admin can reply, but it is not an acknowledgment. Welco emails the reply to the address that sent the alert, so the team sees who answered. Nothing is closed or marked as owned in your monitoring tool.
