A SIGNL4 alternative for machine alerts in Canadian plants

Welco is a SIGNL4 alternative for Canadian plant teams whose CMMS, historian or PLC gateway already sends email. The tech on shift gets the machine-down alert as a plain text, on any phone, with no app to roll out. Choose SIGNL4 if you want its mobile app or its 200+ ready-made integrations.

  • SIGNL4 offers mobile alerting for operations, IT, IoT and SCADA teams, with 200+ integrations.
  • It is sold per user. See signl4.com for current prices.
  • Welco turns alert emails into ordinary texts. Techs need no app and no login.
  • Welco suits a plant, say a parts maker in southern Ontario, whose machines and CMMS already send email.

Who should pick SIGNL4, and who should pick Welco

SIGNL4 is a full mobile alerting tool with a strong industrial focus. OnPage also relies on an app, with alerts that persist until read. Here is how to tell which kind of plant you run.

  • Pick SIGNL4: you want an app for your crew

SIGNL4 runs as a mobile app. Welco has none and sends plain texts.

  • Pick SIGNL4: your sources have no email option

SIGNL4 offers 200+ integrations and an API. Welco needs an email to start from. For sensors with no system at all, see Welco vs Sensaphone.

  • Pick SIGNL4: you need to know who took the job

Welco reports delivery, but it can't pass an unread alert to the next tech or track who acted on it.

  • Pick Welco: your machines already send email

The machines, the CMMS and the historian email their alarms today. Nobody has to install an app on a shared shift phone.

  • Pick Welco: your crew carries mixed phones

Some techs carry company phones and others use their own, on Rogers, Bell, Telus or a regional network. A text works on all of them, with nothing to enroll.

  • Pick Welco: you staff the floor in shifts

Set one time window for each shift with on-call routing. A fault at 2 p.m. goes to second shift, and one at 2 a.m. goes to the night tech.

Machine alerts through an app, then as plain texts

On the plant floor, the difference is what the tech has to carry and read at 2 a.m.

Alerts through an app

  • Each tech signed up, and the app rolled out to every phone.
  • A shared shift phone that someone must keep logged in.
  • Teams to build and keep current for each shift.
  • Tag codes like LT-12 ALARM_A that mean little half asleep.

Alerts through Welco

  • A text that reaches any Canadian cellphone, including basic phones with no app store.
  • Nothing to keep logged in. Each tech confirms once with YES.
  • Shift windows that match your real hours, weekends included.
  • Plain machine names, with back-to-normal emails left out of texts.

A machine-down work order, sent as a text

A CMMS (the maintenance software that tracks work orders) emails the crew when a machine stops. The text keeps what the tech needs to walk over.

Alert email from notify@cmms.example.ca, subject “MACHINE DOWN - CNC Cell 4”. Welco trims it to one text of 100 characters: “Welco: [CNC Cell 4] MACHINE DOWN, pallet change fault, WO 48213 at 2:18 PM. Reply STOP to opt out.”

Text received: Welco: [CNC Cell 4] MACHINE DOWN, pallet change fault, WO 48213 at 2:18 PM. Reply STOP to opt out.

The full work order stays in the CMMS. See how maintenance and CMMS alerts are set up.

Where Welco fits as a SIGNL4 alternative

Welco fits a plant where the alarms already leave the building as email.

  • Line stops stay readable

When a conveyor stops, every station downstream may alarm. Alarm flood control limits the burst so phones stay readable. Manufacturing teams use it on busy lines.

  • PLC alarms without a connector

If your PLC or its gateway can send an email, it can reach a phone. See common PLC alarm setups, including Rockwell FactoryTalk alarm texts.

  • Tag codes turned into plain names

A rule can swap a code for a plain name, so the tech knows which machine to walk to. A second rule can drop back-to-normal emails.

  • A line lead and a tech on one alert

Send a machine-down alert to several phones when both the tech and the line lead need to know.

Route shift alerts through Welco in 15 minutes

Start with the machine or line that wakes people up most often.

  1. Sign up and verify the plant

Create a Welco account and complete the business check. You get the Welco address your alerts will use.

  2. Invite each shift's techs

Send a join link to first, second and third shift. Each tech enters their own cellphone number and confirms with YES.

  3. Make a time window for each shift

Match your real shift hours, including weekends and statutory holidays. Alerts in that window go to that shift's phones.

  4. Change the CMMS notification email

Approve the CMMS sending address in Welco. Then add your Welco address to the machine-down notification list.

  5. Open a test work order

Raise a test machine-down order and check which phone gets the text. Adjust the windows if the wrong shift gets it.

Frequently asked questions

Do maintenance techs need a smartphone app for Welco alerts?

No. Welco sends standard text messages, so any mobile phone that gets texts will work. That includes basic phones with no app store. Each tech replies YES once to confirm, and after that alerts arrive like any other text.

Can Welco send day-shift and night-shift alerts to different techs?

Yes. Set a time window for each shift, with days of the week, in your plant's own time zone, from Newfoundland to Pacific. Alerts that arrive in a window go to that shift's phones. You can also split by machine or line with a rule on the sender or subject.

What if one machine fault sends 50 alert emails in a minute?

Turn on alarm flood control. It limits how many alerts become texts in a burst, so phones don't fill up. Alerts over the limit are not texted, so set it high enough to keep the first ones. A rule can also drop the cleared or back-to-normal messages.

Does Welco have a ready-made connector for my PLC or CMMS?

No. Welco has no one-off connectors or plug-ins. It works with any system that can send an email, which covers most CMMS tools, historians and PLC gateways. If your system can email an alert, you can point it at your Welco address.

What does Welco cost for a Canadian plant maintenance crew?

Welco charges no per-user fee, so the cost doesn't grow with the size of the crew. You pay for the texts sent, in message credits, and short machine alerts use the fewest. New accounts get a 7-day free trial with 15 credits, and the verification card isn't charged until you approve a plan. Welco plans are listed in US dollars, and Canadian plants pay in US dollars too.

How do I move a team from the SIGNL4 app to Welco texts?

Move one alert source at a time. Point it at your Welco address, keep SIGNL4 running for that source, and compare for a week. When the texts reach the right shift, remove that source from SIGNL4. Repeat until the app is no longer needed.

Does Welco touch our PLCs or the plant control network?

No. Welco only receives the alert email your CMMS, historian or gateway already sends out. Nothing connects back into the plant network, and nothing writes to a PLC.

Machine alerts on every tech's phone, no app needed

Point your CMMS or historian at Welco and the shift on duty gets the text.
