What is toll-free verification for business texts?

Toll-free verification is a review that confirms which business is texting from a toll-free number and what kind of texts it sends. US networks block texts from numbers that skip it. Alert texts to staff need it just like any other business text.

In plain English, with what it means for alert texts.

What the verification review checks

The business shares its legal name, address, website and the type of texts it plans to send. It also shows how people agree to get them, which is called opt-in.

Sample messages are part of the file. Reviewers compare them with the stated use, so alarm samples should look like real alarms.

From February 17, 2026, most new submissions also need a business registration number, such as an EIN (the US tax ID for a company). That comes from an industry rule change (read October 5, 2026).

When unverified numbers started being blocked

The blocking rule took effect on January 31, 2024. From that date, networks stopped texts from toll-free numbers that were unverified or still pending, as set out in the October 2023 industry notice.

A blocked alarm looks like silence on the phone. Nothing tells the operator a text was ever sent. The sender's receipt from the network is often the only clue.

A sample alert in a verification file

A water utility texting pump and chemical alarms to its operators might list a sample like this one.

  • Chlorine residual alarm: Welco: [Well 7] Chlorine residual LOW 0.2 mg/L at 6:15 AM. Reply STOP to opt out.

A phone showing these alert texts: Chlorine residual alarm, "Welco: [Well 7] Chlorine residual LOW 0.2 mg/L at 6:15 AM. Reply STOP to opt out."

Toll-free verification vs 10DLC registration

Both are US checks on who is texting and why. Verification covers toll-free numbers. 10DLC registration covers local numbers and splits the check into a brand and a campaign.

Neither one is a promise that every text arrives. A verified number can still have a text stopped by carrier filtering.

How verification affects your alert texts

Welco sends from toll-free numbers it has already verified, so you never file anything with the networks yourself. You sign up with a work email, share your business details and book a short intro call.

Each staff member still joins with their own phone and replies YES, which is the opt-in proof reviewers want. The toll-free verification guide has the full process. More number terms are in our SMS alert glossary.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if a toll-free number is still pending verification?

US networks treat it like an unverified number and block its texts. Alarms sent while a review is open do not reach phones. Finish verification before you depend on the number.

Why do reviewers ask for sample messages?

They check that the texts match the stated use. A file that says staff alarms should show alarm texts, with the business name and the opt-out line. Samples that read like marketing get sent back.

Does a verified number mean texts are never blocked?

No. Verification shows who is sending, but networks still scan each text for spam. Plain alarm wording and a clean opt-in record help most.

What business details does Welco ask for at sign-up?

Your legal name, website, tax ID, address and the alert system you use, among others. Carriers expect every sender to be checked this way. A personal email address can't be used to sign up.
