Verizon vtext.com is shutting down: an alternative for your alarms

If vtext.com is not working for your alarms, the alternative is one address change, and the Verizon phone gets alarm texts again today. Verizon is a US carrier, so this matters to Canadian teams with staff on US phones. Verizon is closing vtext.com and vzwpix.com and expects the job done by March 31, 2027. Some senders lose access sooner.

Reservoir RTU emails 2075550143@vtext.com; the Verizon gateway replies 250 OK but drops it, so no text arrives. The same alert sent to reservoir-alarms@welco.ai goes through Welco to the phone. The email reaches Welco and the phone shows: “Welco: [North Reservoir] Level LOW, 6.2 ft at 3:58 AM. Reply STOP to opt out.”

Animation: the old carrier address 2075550143@vtext.com is replaced with the Welco address reservoir-alarms@welco.ai, and alerts arrive again.
  • Verizon's notice says the vtext.com and vzwpix.com shutdown should be complete by March 31, 2027 (Verizon support, read Oct 5, 2026).
  • Verizon serves US phones only. A Canadian on Rogers, Bell or Telus was never reached through vtext.
  • Some senders lose access before the end date, and spam filtering may already be stopping messages.
  • The fix: replace each @vtext.com address with your Welco address, then test.

What changes once vtext is off your alarm list

  • The US phone buzzes again

Each alarm lands as an ordinary text on the confirmed phone. A Verizon phone in Maine and a Telus phone in Ottawa get the same text.

  • Proof before you delete vtext

Run both addresses for one day. You see the Welco text land while the old gateway is still in place.

  • Nights reach the standby person

Time-of-day routing sends after-hours alarms to whoever is on call, not to the whole list.

  • A dropped text can't hide

Every alarm text gets a delivery report that says whether it arrived and, if not, why.

When does Verizon shut down vtext.com?

Verizon's vtext and vzwpix shutdown notice says the gateway is being phased out now. Verizon expects to finish by March 31, 2027, and warns that some senders may lose access sooner. It is one part of the wider carrier email-to-text shutdown, which in Canada already took Bell's gateway.

The notice adds that messages may already fail because of automatic spam filtering. For business senders, Verizon points to its own Enterprise Messaging product rather than a new email address.

So there is no single switch-off day to plan around. Your alarm could work on Monday and vanish on Tuesday. By contrast, AT&T's txt.att.net shutdown and Bell's closure on December 31, 2025 each had one fixed date.

Is my Verizon alarm affected?

  1. 1.Does any alarm, monitor or data logger email an address ending in @vtext.com or @vzwpix.com?
  2. 2.Does anyone on your call list carry a US phone, such as a contractor, a US-based manager or staff at a US site?
  3. 3.Was the system set up from a US vendor manual or forum post that suggested a vtext address?

Answer the 3 questions to see your result.

Signs your vtext alarms are already slipping

A phase-out fails in patches, not all at once. Look for these patterns in the last few months of alarms. There are other reasons alarm texts stop too.

  • An alarm text shows up long after the event, or after the problem has cleared.
  • Two alarms leave the system a minute apart, and only one reaches the US phone.
  • One Verizon phone gets the text while a second Verizon phone on the same list doesn't.
  • The alarm system's mail log says sent, yet the phone shows nothing for that time.

Swap vtext.com for Welco in 15 minutes

Because vtext still works for some senders, you can run both paths for a day. That gives you proof before you delete anything. The full carrier migration checklist covers larger sites and the Canadian gateways too.

  1. List every vtext address

Search each system's contacts, users and notification lists for vtext.com and vzwpix.com. Write down the system, the phone number and who owns that phone.

  2. Set up Welco and invite the phone owners

Sign up with your work email and get your business verified. Email an invite to each phone owner on your list. They join with their own number and reply YES.

  3. Approve the system as a sender

Add the address your alarm system sends from to your approved senders. Mail from anyone else is refused.

  4. Add your Welco address next to the vtext one

For one day, leave the old address in place and add your Welco address beside it. Trigger a test alarm and see which text arrives.

  5. Remove the vtext address

Once the Welco text arrives, delete @vtext.com from the system. A half-working gateway left in place only hides future failures.

A reservoir alarm before and after the switch

A border-area water system sends its tank alarms to a contract operator who carries a US Verizon phone. Through Welco, the operator gets the part that matters, alongside the Canadian staff.

Alert email from scada-mail@water.example.org, subject “ALARM: Reservoir 1 Level High”. Welco trims it to one text of 93 characters: “Welco: [Reservoir 1] Tank level HIGH alarm active, 9.6 m at 9:48 PM. Reply STOP to opt out.”

Text received: Welco: [Reservoir 1] Tank level HIGH alarm active, 9.6 m at 9:48 PM. Reply STOP to opt out.

See more water examples on the tank level alarm texts page. One US water district left its vtext addresses the same way.

Systems that often point at vtext addresses

Many Canadian sites run software set up from US documentation. A few vendors still tell users to text through a carrier gateway.

Frequently asked questions

My vtext alarms still arrive. Why change before 2027?

Because Verizon says some senders will lose access before the end date, with no warning to you. A gateway that works today can drop the next alarm. Moving now lets you test the new path calmly, instead of after a missed callout.

Does the Verizon shutdown include vzwpix.com picture messages?

Yes. Verizon's notice covers both vtext.com for text and vzwpix.com for picture messages. If a camera or panel emails snapshots to a vzwpix address, it is on the same path. Welco sends text alerts, and files can arrive as a short link instead of a picture.

Is Verizon Enterprise Messaging the same thing as Welco?

No. Enterprise Messaging is Verizon's own business texting product for US senders. Welco is an alert texting service. It takes the alarm email your system already sends and texts the confirmed on-call phones in Canada or the US, whatever their carrier.

Do Visible and Straight Talk phones rely on vtext too?

Those US brands run on Verizon's network and have used the same vtext.com gateway, as our prepaid brand guide explains. Canadian brands like Koodo or Fido never did. With Welco the carrier doesn't matter, because the text goes to the number itself.

What do on-call staff with US phones need to do?

Very little. They open your email invite, enter their own number and reply YES to one confirmation text. After that, alarm texts arrive from Welco with STOP and HELP options. They keep their phone, plan and number as they are.

vtext was free. What does Welco cost instead?

Welco uses monthly message credits, priced in US dollars, with no per-user fees, no hardware and no setup fee. A long alarm email uses more credits unless Welco trims it to one text. You can run Welco beside vtext during the 7-day free trial, which includes 15 credits. Plans are on the pricing page.
