What is on-call and who gets the alert?

On-call means a named person is ready to respond to problems outside normal hours, usually by phone. When a server goes down or a pump fails at night, the on-call person gets the alert and decides what to do. Teams often take turns so nobody covers every night.

On-call

In plain English, with what it means for alert texts.

How on-call usually works

Most teams split the week into shifts. One tech covers weeknights, another takes the weekend, and a backup is named for both. A good plan also says who covers holidays and how to swap a shift.

The plan is often kept on a shared sheet with names, phones and dates. Our on-call contact sheet is a ready-made one.

The same kind of alert by day and by night

A switch alarm in the afternoon goes to the IT office phone. The same kind of alarm after midnight goes only to the admin in the night window.

  • 2:15 PM, day window: IT office phone: Welco: [Access Switch 3] Port 12 DOWN at 2:15 PM. Reply STOP to opt out.
  • 1:37 AM, night window: on-call admin: Welco: [Core Switch 1] Uplink port 48 DOWN at 1:37 AM. Reply STOP to opt out.

How alerts find the on-call phone

Welco picks the phone by time of day and weekday. With on-call and after-hours routing, daytime alarms can go to the shop and night alarms to the person on call.

When the on-call person changes, you pick the next staff member who has joined for that time window.

On-call vs standby vs on duty

On duty means working a shift on site. On-call means off site but reachable, ready to respond. Plants and utilities often say standby for the same thing.

On-call is also not the same as escalation. Welco does not build rotations, schedules or escalation chains. More on-call words are in our SMS alert glossary.

How to make on-call less tiring

Send nights only the alerts that can't wait until morning. Trim each one to a short text, and cap bursts so one flood of linked alarms doesn't mean fifty texts.

Name a backup, and send them the same alert once they have joined and replied YES. The on-call basics guide walks through a simple plan.

Frequently asked questions

Does the on-call person need an app for Welco alerts?

No. Alerts arrive as plain texts on any mobile phone in the US, Canada, the UK and the Netherlands. The person joins once with their own number and replies YES.

What does on-call mean in IT and in plants?

In IT, it is the admin who answers server, network and backup alerts after hours, often for a week at a time. In plants and utilities, it is the standby operator who drives out to a site. The idea is the same: one named person owns the night.

Can two people be on call at the same time?

Yes. A primary and a backup can both be in the night window and get the same alert. Each phone gets one text per alarm.

What happens to alerts during the hand-over between shifts?

Welco sends each alert to whoever is in the window when the email arrives. Set windows that meet with no gap, so an alarm at the change of shift still has an owner.

Send tonight's alarms to whoever is on call

Set a night window once and alarms reach the right phone.
